Week 2- Verduzco

Week 2
Be Green Challenge
ASA 141
Alejandra Verduzco

As this first week comes to an end I am actually slightly surprised by the temptation that followed me as I walked by stores. I went to target with my friend because she needed to buy groceries and forgetting this challenge I subconsciously walked into the swimwear section. I saw the cute bikini's and decided to look around. It wasn't until I had found something really cute that I remembered I could not give in to the temptation of buying this bathing suit. It was at this moment that I finally realized how we as consumers give in to the temptation of products even though we don't really need it. For instance, I already have two bikini's but I just wanted another to look nice and have society not judge me too harshly in wearing it. This reminded me of the film we watched called "Good Hair," in this film is shown to what extent black people go to fix their hair, not being happy with their natural hair. They are so consumed by the idea that to have good hair they need to put all these harmful chemicals into making their hair silky and straight.  Not to mention spending thousands of dollars into weaves and products to conform to what society believes to be beautiful. This can also be seen in the article "It's Hip To Be Asian" by Parminder Bhachu, this article shows how a salwar-kameez was not popular in the fashion industry until the royals such as Princess Diana began to wear it. Nothing is good enough until society says it is. But why have do we give into society. Why do we conform to what society wants us to wear? Just how I didn't need a bikini but I wanted one to look more visually appealing to the public eye. Why do we tend to shop to try and fit in? Going back to be the green challenge I hope to continue staying away from purchasing any clothing or unnecessary products for my own wants or for trying to fit into society.  In this online article debate, it states the positive and negative effects of fashion in society. (Debate, 2007) Half of society both agree and disagree that fashion takes a toll on the health and financial need of the people. Many people often have health effects from trying to conform to society's views.

Here is a Ted Talk Video dealing with why we conform to society making certain decisions and purchases to fit into society and why we are afraid to stand out.
